Animated Movies
So, screening The District in class today made me think of another animated feature called Persepolis. Persepolis is also an adult-oriented coming-of-age story about an Iranian girl who spends some very formative years in Europe (Vienna). I suppose that their similarities pretty much end there since Persepolis is less a satire than a commentary on Iran's history. Although, both films talk a lot about marginalized groups: Roma (in The District) and women (in Persepolis). Personally, I find Persepolis much more informative and constructive than The District, but I have to respect the filmmakers' decisions to tell their stories in the movies' respective styles. I always wondered why Marji (the main character) decided to remain in Iran and why her family never left in the first place. Maybe it's just been too long since I've seen this movie. Give it a go.
